Mirror People

Since launching his Mirror People project 16 years ago, Rui Maia has become one of nu-disco’s most reliable practitioners, in part because his warm and melodious trademark sound also draws on classy synth-pop, Balearica and the kind of organic, jazz-funk influenced goodness associated with Naples’ 21st century electronic music scene. The Lisbon-based producer and multi-instrumentalist is in fine form on fourth album Desert Island Broadcast. Featuring lyrics and vocals from Maria de Rosario, it’s a hybrid electronic/organic affair that offers nods aplenty to everything from classic disco and Balearic beats to bossa-nova, Giorgio Moroder, 90s downtempo grooves, Nu Genea style Neopolitan colour and the classier end of disco/house fusion.
