Rondalla Rondador

The story of this small but stubbornly persistent cumbia begins far from the places where it eventually took hold. Polibio Mayorga’s original tune travelled across borders, resurfacing in Mexico on a 7″ from Latin Records under a new name and, before long, finding its way into the crates of local sound-system crews. At parties, selectors renamed it again, calling it “La Cumbia Totonaca”, and the track gathered a second life that had little to do with its printed label. Rondalla Rondador’s version captures that wandering spirit. ‘Cumbia de los Patines’ moves with a playful, clipped swing, its melody carrying the easy charm that made the tune so portable. ‘Pita Pita’ leans further into rhythmic repetition, as if built for dancers who already knew where the beat would land. It’s a reminder of how far a simple cumbia can travel once people claim it as their own.
